Harps and the Appreciation of Music

Arts

Music captures the trend and soul of every generation. Your mom and dad had the classic jazz to groove on while your siblings have their punk rock songs to bang their heads with. As your grandparents swayed to swooning ballads of the Platters, your auntie’s jived to the Elvis’s rock music. As it is, music is a timeless piece of art passed on from generation to generation-both the sounds and instruments. Harps are "living" legacies of this artistic aspect in history. If the Orville Brother’s airplane model is the grandfather of our modern airspace industry, so are these unique harps in the world of sounds. Owning one gives you the feeling of being completely unique and original in a time where the combo set and the electric guitars are heralded the symbol of modern music. Stand out from the average crowd, buy your own harp and feel totally golden.

Photography is an artform

Arts

Photography is an art form that is learned and cultivated like any other. The beauty of photography is you can use it to convey so much. You can stimulate an emotion, or conjure up a memory and much more. Photography is about using the creative skill of visualizing how you want to take the perfect picture, so experience makes your ability to do that easier. I loved how that wedding photographer in coventry took her pictures because she was very good at taking shots of emotional impact and detail. When you looked at one of her pictures even if you weren’t their you felt the emotion as if you were.

Applying Quilling Glue

Arts

Which brand or type of glue you choose  to use in your quilling work is very much down to the individuals personal preference.  Most quillers find that a white pva based solvent which dries clear is the best type of glue to use but whichever brand you pick you will need a bottle or applicator to ensure you have control when dispensing the glue.  If either of those aren’t available than a toothpick or small needle will serve just as well.  Decant some glue into a suitable container  and than dip the toothpick or needle in the glue and apply carefully.  Use the toothpick to stir the glue occasionally to stop it drying out.

In the Midst of History at Badlands National Park

Arts

Exploring South Dakota is an amazing way to spend a week or even an entire month.  While there are hundreds of great attractions, nothing quite comes close to the sheer beauty or the immensity of history that Badlands National Park provides.  A short walk into the park can take you back in time hundreds of thousands of years, without digging, or a time machine.

The Badlands are formed from a massive plateau eroding away through the forces of nature.  Through this erosion, an enormous span of time and natural history is displayed.  It shows as multicolored strata, or bands, around the rock formations, hills, valleys and gullies.  Each layer is a different section of the historical record. Numerous fossils are found throughout the site.  In fact, the area is the richest source of Oligocene epoch fossils in the world.  Fossil hunters and scientists from around the world come to this park to hunt and learn from the amazing earth.

Just some of the fossils found show the presence of North American rhinoceros and North American horses (far before the Spaniards brought their horses).  This treasure trove can be explored by car or truck, but it is far better on foot.

Rapiers in the movies

Arts

In the movies, you usualy see the rapier being used when fencing swords are seen. There are other kinds of swords used in fencing, such as the foil and the epee (I hope I spelled that right) but the rapier is the one that is most versatile for movie sort of sword fighting because it isnot just a slashing weapin and nit just a stabbing weapon either, but can be used during sword play to do both. You can use it in a manner designed to cut, stab or slash. You can also parry and block with it. This allows for some rather spectacular sword fighting scenes.

Armstrong Laminate Floors

Arts

Wood and stone flooring can be extremely beautiful and durable, however these natural floors are by no means cheap. Armstrong Laminate Floors can imitate the look of these natural materials without the substantial cost, not only this but they are also very durable. Laminate flooring can be suitable for any room which you want to upgrade. There is a wide variety of colors and designs of Armstrong laminate floors which makes it easy to fit into any room.

Laminate floors are made up of four layers which are stuck together with a durable layer of plastic. The layer of plastic seals the panels and protects them from damage. These floors are rated with an abrasive rating which tells you how well the floor will wear. When using laminate flooring in residential locations a classification rating of around three is suitable.

Just below the protective layer is a photographic image of the flooring material that it is trying to imitate. This is normally either stone or wood, but can be virtually any material. This makes the flooring very realistic. The bulk of the floor panels are made from fiberboard which is impregnated with melamine. This gives the floor its strength. The bottom layer is a mix of paper pulp with resin which prevents moisture causing a problem.

I could have used some wedding dance lessons.

Arts

I recently went to a wedding. I’m not the greatest dancer, but I do okay. At the reception, I was very embarassed. I didn’t realize my nephew had married a dance instructor, who came from a long line of dance instructors. There I was, on the dance floor, with a bunch of professionals. It was very embarassing. I eventually sat down and stayed out of their way. I could have used some wedding dance lessons, and if I had known that they were all dance instructors, I would have taken lessons before the wedding.

The mountain dulcimer, part 2

Arts

In addition to the mountain dulcimer that is old style, there are also electric mountain dulcimers. Now the phenomenon of electric instruments has never really made much sense to me, but there are far more than just electric guitars. There are also electric fiddles, electric banjoes (did I spell that right?), electric dulcimers, and it appears that any stringed instrument can be “electrified”, so to speak.

In fact, now that I think about it, I do indeed remember having seen an electric harp as well. I cannot imagine, however, why anyone in their right mind would want to electrify a harp.
